La bondad de su emplazamiento (antigua región denominada como Baeturia), rodeado de tierras fértiles, apoya la hipótesis de un origen prerromano del enclave, atestiguado por Plinio el Viejo quien señala a Ugultunia como uno de los Oppida célticos más importantes del territorio. Convertida en municipio en época de Julio César, aparece citada por el Itinerario Antonino como una de las principales Mansio de la Vía de la Plata en su recorrido entre Itálica y Augusta Emérita.
